Mega Project Egypt

Intervention and Coaching program on two project assets to develop and change the culture to prevent further incidents to the workforce.

IOSH Annual Conference

Presentation on fast track, mega projects and inexperienced workforce. Making health and safety improvements in North Africa. Presentation described working with construction managers, EHS professionals and frontline workers to manage risk and improve health and safety performance.

The session examined the impact and benefit of coaching interventions to improve hazard management, construction safety, maintaining progress, people engagement and communication.

This presentation was based on the Clipper57 Consulting report on the state of safety on North African construction sites. Language barriers and inadequate policy enforcement among an inexperienced workforce were the primary reasons for shortcomings.

On a project in Morocco, Clipper 57 Consulting found method statements that were 14 pages long: “I’ve got 200 farmers that have come in off the field. Some are welders, steel fixers, riggers – they don’t read English and they don’t understand English. How do you think that’s going to work?” He consolidated the documents into one page “to give the interpreter the opportunity to say, ‘This is what you need to do, don’t do this; job done.’”

"It was a pleasure to work with you throughout the Shell Rejuvenation Project and we are aware that the striving for best practice was driven by you personally. We also know that you achieved considerable success in raising the profile of health and safety generally within the project and were highly respected by all levels of personnel from the workforce to Senior Management. We look forward to working with you in the future."

-Graeme Smith, Technical Director, Fairhurst

"Thank you most sincerely for the giving of your valuable time in coming to Chertsey to take part in our Jubilee Seminar on the 22nd May. From the feedback we have received, it appears that your presentation went down very well with the delegates attending and I am sure they must have taken away some good ideas to utilise in their own companies. Thank you again for your help with the Seminar and with providing such valuable handout material."

Marion Griffin, Company Secretary/General Manger, Construction Health & Safety Group

"Mr Wade Pilkington joined the MMENAM / KPNO Oil & Gas Export Project when the offshore HSE documentation was non existent and the first part of the first phase was nearing completion. With very little resources and a very short time frame he pulled together the required offshore HSE documents and had them approved by our client. A very professionally performed exercise that required a lot of dedication and effort on his part. He then travelled to Nigeria and set up, coordinated the required offshore pre-start work safety courses etc. and put into place the required procedures to the satisfaction of our client. I will personally miss Wade, his professionalism and dedication in carrying out his duties for the safety of the offshore work in Nigeria. I have no reservations in recommending him to any future employer and I would like to thank him for his professionalism and dedication that only true HSE professionals like Wade can give to a project."

Chris Howard, Project HSE Manager of AMENAM 2 Project, SaiBOS AKOGEP

"I worked closely with Wade for a period of three years durning the execution phase of a £180 million brownfield rejuvenation project. I found Wade to be a highly experienced HSE manager who engaged well with and was well respected by the project construction workforce. Wade proved adept at successfully effecting positive safety behavioural change across all levels of the project which resulted in a significant improvement of the project TRC frequency. Wade was instrumental in setting up a comprehensive HSE framework for the project and coaching the project management in the day-to day requirements of the applicable UK HSE legislation, particularly in relation to CDM regulations (2007). On a personal level I know Wade to be passionate about health and safety and I am grateful that I had his HSE management skill set available to support my leadership of commissioning activities."

Ray Moore, CSU Lead for NSP Rejuvenation Project, SHELL

"I’ve known Wade for the past five years and in that time he has demonstrated an unerring eye for unsafe work practices. He has a knack of getting to the key people in any project and finding out what and where the issues are. Wade builds rapport quickly, which helps when dealing with tricky situations. He has been an excellent partner when we’ve worked on projects together."
